Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

No. All files are processed locally on your Mac only. The app doesn’t connect to any server and also works offline. See the app’s privacy policy for details.

How do I reach a specific file size, e.g. for an email attachment?

Enter the target size in MB at the top of the sidebar and turn on “Adjust automatically”. On export, the app lowers resolution and JPEG quality step by step until the file fits. “Minimum DPI” and “Minimum quality” set how far it may go at most.

Does text stay selectable and searchable after shrinking?

With the “Images only” compression, yes – only embedded images are shrunk, text and vector graphics stay untouched. “Whole pages”, a changed color mode and 2 or 4 pages per sheet save the pages as images instead; text is no longer selectable afterwards.

Why does my file barely get smaller?

PDFs that consist mostly of text are often already very compact. The PDF analysis in the sidebar shows the compression potential and suggests suitable settings. If your settings would make a file larger, the original is saved on export when all pages are selected.

Is my original file changed?

No. On export you choose where to save, and a new file is always created. The original stays untouched.

Can I remove individual pages?

Yes. Click a page’s thumbnail under “Remove pages” in the sidebar to exclude it from the export. Click again to include it.

What are the system requirements?

SlimShift PDF requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later. The app is available in English and German.
